Achieving balance with flexible working

Sharron Knaggs and Alexandra Shardlow

Business, work and our lives are changing rapidly and the importance of work life balance has never been greater. At NatWest Markets we understand the value of flexible working, it lets people bring their authentic self to work and balance progressing their career with other priorities in their life. Flexible working is just one of the ways that make NatWest Markets a great place to work.

Flexible working can mean working part time, working from home, at different locations or job sharing. We encourage ownership of your workload and time to enable you to do those things outside of work that are important to you.

You can have a career and balance

We work with employees to plan how they can work flexibly, we also recruit for a number of part time and, in many locations, job sharing roles. Directors in the Leveraged Loan Credit Sales team Sharon Knaggs and Alexandra Shardlow have a job share that gives them both the work life balance they want.

Sitting on the sales desk in a busy customer facing role Sharon says "We think it’s an enhancement having two people. If you think of someone running in a relay team, both of us running 200m each is always going to be more powerful than one person running 400m".

Speaking of the support from colleagues across the business Alexandra adds "they respect the skills and experience that we both bring to the role. Using Sharon’s analogy of a running race, we come with a different intensity. It’s also very useful to bounce ideas off each other, two heads are sometimes better than one".

A job share is the ideal set up for both Sharon and Alexandra "there’s no separation in responsibilities or deals. We both have the same remit and compete as one person. You can have a career and balance, neither of us are stepping off the career ladder, we are still building one" says Sharon.

A holistic solution for all parties

We know that it’s our people that make NatWest Markets a great place to work so ensuring colleagues get the right kind of flexible working, where business needs allow, in order to achieve the right work life balance is important to us. There are benefits for both the business and employees. Alexandra says "NatWest Markets support our ‘power share’ by treating us exactly the same as all other employees. There isn’t any differentiation, that’s the point of it; it’s a holistic solution for all parties. They reap the advantages of two brains, twice the enthusiasm and double the creativity. We are accountable to each other, this increases our accountability to NatWest Markets- WIN for us and a WIN for NatWest Markets".
