They came, they saw, they coded

May 2019

Hundreds of NWM Technology colleagues from across India and Singapore team up to solve big problems with big ideas.

Over 270 NatWest Markets Technology colleagues in Gurgaon, Chennai, and Singapore gathered on Friday 11 May and worked for over 24 hours solid, tackling big business challenges with even bigger ideas.

Grouped into 60 teams, they were participating in NatWest Markets’ second hackathon – a collaborative, intense, solutions-focused event, at which ideas are devised, scrutinised, and captured from concept to code.

Supported by a variety of start-ups who had applied to join in the ‘hack-a-fun’, including Growth Enabler and Web3Labs, the teams worked through the night addressing the following topics:

  • Blockchain-based Bond issuance
  • Data visualisation – creating context out of data
  • Artificial Intelligence for employee engagement

The event kicked off on Friday afternoon with insights from industry experts including Arun Mehta, a thought leader on big data; data scientist Anshul Solanki on the democratisation of AI; and Varun Sharma, a specialist on deep learning.

The teams competed to come up with the best solutions, which they then pitched to senior leaders across the organisation. Participants honed their ‘sales’ skills with coaching from Af Malhotra, co-founder and CEO of Growth Enabler.

NatWest Markets’ colleagues are curious and energised by innovation and emerging technologies. We encourage participation in all sorts of events and activities, such as presentations from world-leaders in AI, coding workshops for beginners, and hackathons, of course. Following the success of our India/APAC event, plans are in place to hold one in London later this year, and the US as part of Stamford Innovation Week.
